    Scalloping Season Near Mexico Beach

    The ultimate "underwater Easter egg hunt" for families visiting the Forgotten Coast.

    If you are visiting Mexico Beach in the late summer, you are in for one of the most unique and beloved traditions on the Florida Gulf Coast: Bay Scalloping.

    When Is It?

    Typically mid-August through late September. Exact dates vary by year.

    Where Is It?

    St. Joseph Bay, just a short drive or boat ride from Mexico Beach.

    Who Can Do It?

    Anyone who can snorkel! It's incredibly safe and kid-friendly.

    What is Scalloping?

    Think of scalloping as an underwater Easter egg hunt. You float face-down in the shallow, crystal-clear waters of St. Joseph Bay, looking down into the turtle grass. Tucked among the blades of grass, you'll spot the glowing blue eyes and round shells of bay scallops.

    When you spot one, you simply dive down (usually only 2 to 6 feet deep) and scoop it up with your hands or a small dip net. It requires very little skill, making it the perfect activity for kids and grandparents alike.

    How to Go Scalloping from Mexico Beach

    While Mexico Beach itself sits on the Gulf of Mexico, the scalloping happens in the protected, shallow waters of St. Joseph Bay (just past Cape San Blas). You have two main options:

    Option 1: Book a Scallop Charter (Recommended)

    Option 2: Bring Your Own Boat

    Note: If you go on your own, you MUST purchase a Florida recreational saltwater fishing license and display a diver-down flag while snorkeling.

    What to Bring on the Boat

    • Mask, Snorkel, and Fins: Essential for spotting and diving down to the scallops.
    • Mesh Bag: To hold the scallops while you swim.
    • Sun Protection: You will be floating face-down with your back to the sun for hours. Wear a UV rash guard and apply reef-safe sunscreen to the back of your legs!
    • Water & Snacks: Snorkeling is a workout, and the kids will get hungry.
    • A Cooler with Ice: Scallops must be put on ice immediately to keep them fresh and help their shells pop open for easier cleaning.
